Doctor Who aired only in GALICIA, a north western region of Spain, near the border with Portugal.

Television Stations / Channels

The official language of Galicia is Galician, a derivation of Portuguese. Like all TVG programming, Doctor Who was dubbed into that language.

DOCTOR WHO (O DOUTOR WHO) IN SPAIN / GALICIA

The sale to Spain / Galicia was towards the tail-end of the Third Wave of sales, but also one of the first sales to Europe (see Selling Doctor Who).

BBC Records

None of our principal BBC Records sources report the sale to Spain/Galicia.

In DWB issue 43 (May 1987), there is a report that a sale was made "to Spain at the recent European TV Fair months after France did a U-Turn"... Given the February 1988 start date of Doutor Who on TVG, this sale to "Spain" would appear to be to the Galicia region.

A profile for Doctor Who in Galician can be found on wikipedai:

Stories bought and broadcast

TOM BAKER

The exact number of stories that aired is unknown; but from comments made in this BLOG, and this FORUM, the run included at least the following four stories:

Gonzalo Uriarte – O Doutor Who!
4A Robot 4 Robot
4C The Ark in Space 4 El Arca del Espacio
4E Genesis of the Daleks 6
4D Revenge of the Cybermen 4

The programme was supplied as PAL colour video tapes, and these were dubbed into Galician.

The voice artist who dubbed for Tom Baker was GONZALO URIARTE, who bears an uncanny resemblance to a younger William Hartnell!

Uriarte worked primarily as a voice actor, dubbing many actors (such as Roy Scheider and Tom Baker), but is chiefly known as the Galician voice of actor Peter O'Toole.

Transmission

TOM BAKER

The series – known as Doutor Who - commenced on Tuesday, 23 February 1988, starting with Robot.

No further details are known; presumably the series ran on a weekly basis.
